Lately, in the Studio

Lately, I've been having lots of fun playing with new work in the studio, tinkering around with bits of silver and dashes of colour, just the way I like things.

I've started playing with a new range inspired by the scales on Japanese Koinobori banners.  I want the pieces stackable with variations in colours that will blend together, these are some of my results so far....

I've also started extending my "Rock Pool" range.  My scarlet Rock Pool drop earrings are my go-to earrings, they go with most things in my wardrobe and I feel instantly more glamourous just by slipping them on.  I'm now working on some stacking rings to add to the range in a variety of different hues.

And of course, the main purpose of my recent trip to Japan was to source new fabric and handmade papers for the Kimono Reincarnate signature ranges.  I really love the treasures I found and how they're turning out.

And pssst... there are some new "Quilted" designs being added to my Kyoto Collection.

Recently I took an online drawing class with Lisa Congdon on Creativebug.  Even though I have a degree in Visual Arts, I realised that other than quick not-good-enough-to-show-anyone sketches of jewellery design ideas, I haven't done any pen sketching since my second year of university, which was a very long time ago.  While I'm still feeling rather rusty, it's been great to get pen back on paper and to doodle away.

I have plans for some of those doodles too.... and have been getting a few prototypes made which hopefully I can show you in the next couple of months...

This week the work in the studio is all about getting ready for the GoMA Winter Design Market.  It's on this Saturday, 19th July at the entrance to the Queensland GoMA gallery, South Brisbane.

Then, for a couple of weeks after the market I'll be working on a big update of my website to include the new designs.

Make Your Own Kanzashi Kits and a Birthday Sale

Over the last few days I've been very busy ironing, measuring and cutting lots of gorgeous little pieces of kimono fabric....

After many requests I've finally fulfilled my promise to put together little kits to make your own kimono kanzashi.  The tutorial has been available on my blog for a while, but the kits give you access to the little hard-to-get-your-hands-on pieces such as the kimono fabrics and special brooch backs.  You can find them over here.

My other little piece of news is that it's my birthday this weekend!  To celebrate, I'll be having a sale with 20% off everything in both my stores, here and here from Saturday until Monday AND a chance to win an additional 20% off.  I'll put the sale details and exclusive coupon code up mid-tomorrow morning, after a birthday weekend sleep-in first of course.

1:365 Starting Afresh

My first attempt at the 365 this year failed within the first few days.  I started out really excited yet very quickly felt locked in by using the same medium everyday.  It was like my inner toddler stomped her foot and said "But I want to play with silver / resin / paint today"...  I felt that I could only do it if I created something great...  I felt that I needed to go from start to finish all in the time that was available that day... I was embarrassed that I had failed so quickly so went to hide under a rock.

It was an interesting lesson to learn, it really highlighted parts of myself that I had only suspected were there.

Today, I have started to try a new 365 challenge.  A mood board of sorts, a quick (and I am setting myself a time limit) visualisation on my thoughts / plans for the day.  Today's was "Start Afresh".  The basil, rosemary and lavender leaves are freshly picked from my garden and all have aromas that I associate with freshness.

I still want to create something tangible each day, or at least work on a project, so I'm locking myself into a little creative playtime each morning before I turn on my computer.  These pieces I may or may not share so that I don't feel pressure (from myself)

The irony is, the first thing I wanted to play with was the same kimono fabric that I was resisting a couple of weeks ago.  Years ago I used to make "Kimono Bubble" greeting cards and am working at some new originals for these.  They are now waiting for some stitched details.

On instagram today, a number of people said that they find weekly or monthly challenges more manageable.  Have you ever tried a regular challenge like this?  What worked best for you?

Free BrisAsia Workshops

Starting next week, Brisbane Brown Owls will be hosting a range of Asian-inspired craft workshops as part of the BrisAsia festival.  I'm very excited to be running two different workshops myself.

Firstly I'll be teaching how to make Japanese Tsumami "Kanzashi" style flowers using vintage kimono fabrics.

And also how to make these adorable traditional Japanese paper dolls.

Workshops are being run by a number of inspiring Brisbane artists including Liana Kabel, Rebecca Cason of Edward and Lilly fame, Gill Pyke of Catamation and Dyani Edwards of Little Deer Creations.  And even better - they are all free!

For more information on the workshops and how to book a space head over here.

Massive Kimono Fabric Sale This Weekend

With the big moving date getting much closer, the BrisStyle Eco Market couldn't have come at a better time.  This Saturday, I'll be having a big sale on lots of gorgeous kimonos, kimono fabrics, Japanese cottons, Japanese papers, magazines and clearance jewellery stock that I can't take with me to the new studio.  I'll even have a large box of free fabric that needs a good home.

For the last hour of the market, from 1 to 2pm, all of the destash stock (jewellery not included) will be reduced to half price of the already on-sale prices.

A sneak peek of some of the fabric that needs a good, loving home....

Hope to see you there!

Life Lately - In Pictures

A little look at what's been going on around these parts lately....

I've been making some new washi tape pendants ready for Finders Keepers this weekend...

Some of my kimono fabric for sale has been finding new homes...

The family had a gorgeous day out at Seaworld...

I was taught the basics of knitting, all for a good cause, this will go to the Born to Knit drive.

Our family had its first Sunday "Crafternoon" which was lots of fun.  The little one painted, the  Man did some leatherwork and I crocheted some granny squares.

The first lot of silver came back from the caster.  I'm now in the process of cutting the sprue and doing the final finishing touches...

And I've starting working on more origami pieces, this time with the masters in wax.

What's been happening around your place lately?

Eco Market Packing

The car is getting packed for tomorrow's BrisStyle Indie Eco Market and I'm very excited!

Here's a sneak peek of some of what is going with me....

I'm having a huge seconds sale.  Working with resin, sometimes I get a stubborn bubble or a speck of dust, but yet the piece still looks very pretty.  Tomorrow I'll have bowls of pendants, rings as well as a few hairclips, earrings and brooches....

As well as my bamboo teapot, kokeshi and origami brooches, I have a few, well let's not call them "old" girls, because no girl likes to be called "old", but rather some kokeshi with the older  hairstyle, they'll be on sale.

Also on the jewellery table will be a few of my new earrings, all made from recycled stainless steel and recycled silver.

And then we hit the fabric, lots and lots and lots of fabric...

There will be suitcases full of vintage kimono fabric pieces....

And another full of kimono offcuts that can be bought by the gram.

I'll have full kimonos as well...

And be destashing some of my Japanese cotton fabrics and papers...

Now I just hope it all fits in the car!

The Blog Tour Version - The Reincarnated Kimono Project

The Reincarnated Kimono Project exhibition has been in full swing for a week now, we've had our artists' night to celebrate and I'm so chuffed with the response we've had.

So now dear blog readers, would you like a tour?  Get yourself a cup or glass of your favourite beverage and join me for a wander through the gallery....

Each of these artworks have been produced using and inspired by fabric from the same two vintage kimonos.

The first piece is by Thea Samios of Thea and Sami, titled "An Aussie in a Japanese Garden".  Thea is a screen printer whose work has a strong Australian natural feel to it and her piece is a beautiful meeting of the two.  You can read more about the process of the work over here.

I created a couple of pieces for the show.  The first is a pair of "Kimono Cranes".  The wings have been embroidered with the words "Love" and "Joy".

Gill Pyke of Catamation works a lot with origami as well and created these amazing modular origami atlas beetles.

I knew that Robyn Dixon was a talented quilter and begged her to whip up a piece for the show.  At the artists' night she talked about how quilters love to cut fabric up and then join it all together again.  And boy did she do an amazing job on this piece.  It's even more beautiful in real life.

The second piece I did for the show was a large statement "kanzashi" necklace which I've called "Blooms at Midnight".  It's been made with a collection of folded flowers on a laser cut wool felt base.

The other jewellery piece in the show is by silversmith Emma Kidson.  The stunning piece has been inspired by one of the motifs in the fabric and has a tiny snippet of it preserved in the corner.  You can see the inspiration in this photo here.

"Elements" is the title of the beautiful mixed media artwork by Chrissy Foreman C.  As well as the kimono fabric, she's used pen, watercolour and crayon to create the vibrant piece.  You can read more about this piece here.

Most Brisbane lovers of Japanese fabric will know the local and very popular design label Maiocchi.  They created a piece especially for the show that lets the fabric's beauty really shine.

Rachael Smith of Penelope and Pip is an illustrator and showed us that her talents extend even further.  Her ikebana piece is titled "I Heart Autumn" and was inspired by her time spent visiting a (mutual) friend in Japan.  Rachael put into words so beautifully what I've felt for years working with these gorgeous fabrics;

“What inspires me about the project is transforming a piece of material with its own history and journey into an artwork completely different to its original intent, but still every bit as beautiful. The piece I am creating takes the material into a new path in terms of its use, but still pays homage to its history and the loving work of its original designer in creating it. Being given such a small amount to work with makes the process all that much more special as you know you are working with something precious that has a life of its own - fabric is not necessarily an easy beast to tame either! When you work with fabric, its tactile nature tends to make you feel connected to the material and its past, and this means often the result is a surprise for you as well.”

I'm trying to come up with an occasion that I can clothe my little girl in this stunning dress by Amelia of Nan's Garden.  If you look closely, the bodice has been embroidered with a crane design taken from the kimono fabric as well.  Truly these photos don't do it justice, but there is a much more magical picture over here.

"Reincarnated Geisha" is the title of this stunning multi media work by Samantha Gilkes of Jetta's Nest.  And I just love it even more for the fact that it's been done on a recycled skateboard!  “The attention to detail in kimono fabric is almost overwhelming!” she said.  “The colours, the layering of fabric and print... it’s like a dream woven into every piece.”

I loved the fact that Kate Allan of Dash Robin was really eager to embrace the marks that time had left on the fabric for her work.  “I love using materials which have had a life before... small marks suggest stories, who wore this kimono, how did they feel, what memories were made, where are they now?  Time passing, impermanence, memory; marking these somehow into the piece is important to me and inspiring me.”

Nicole Lacey had some very beautiful things to say at the artists' night about the inspiration and process behind her work that related to the discipline needed to create simplicity that is evident in Japanese art.  In her artwork "Koryu", you can see how influenced she has been, not only by the Japanese sense of design, but also by its culture.

Catherine from Made by Maisie creates beautiful dolls and her "Kokeshi Doll" using the kimono fabric is just so sweet.

Stephanie Morris of Wimcee is a painter as well as a crafter and I think her use of colour and pattern really brings that across.  In her range of bags and pouches that she made for the show, she combined the vintage kimono fabric with modern Japanese, and vintage and modern western fabrics.  She said about the work;

"What was significant for me during the construction of the pieces for this exhibition was the sense that colour and pattern are more universal than we generally realise, both in time and space, so that the combinations of fabrics that I was working with all came together effortlessly, almost joyously, despite such varied provenance."

And lastly in the tour we have Danielle Wood of Manx Minx's adorable critters, called "Nomoki".  She tells us a little about them; "Nomoki are sofa travellers of film and literature.  Indeed, they love a good comedy and especially like Bill Oddie from "The Goodies" because he is small and furry like them.  Often you'll find them dancing along the back of the couches, making scrap books with comics, or going off like Mr Squiggle with a new box of crayons."

I have to say that I have truly enjoyed putting this project and exhibition together and have been blown away by everyone's gorgeous work.

If you're in Brisbane, the show runs until the end of April and is at;

5/235 Boundary Street West End.
