Flick Faves on a Friday - Quilts

With 139 crochet flowers finished (but not yet joined - but that's another story), my hands have been itching for another just-for-me project.  Something without a deadline, something that I can easily pick up for a few minutes and come back to when I'm ready...

So I think I'm going to.... wait for it mum.... attempt my first quilt.

Now, I have to be honest with you.  The thought of cutting out all those pieces to an exact size makes me break out in a sweat.  The idea of all that sewing in a straight line shortens my breath, and my biggest fear of all, is combining colours and patterns.  That notion just about brings on a panic attack.  And we won't even discuss the actual quilting involved after the quilt top is done.

So instead, this is my inspiration, I want to make a yoyo quilt.  I love to make yoyos, and I can get the benefit of texture without actual quilting.  I have a bolt of a gorgeous aqua fabric that I bought with another idea in mind that has since been cast aside.  So I'm thinking of working in a simple palette of aqua and red.

My mum's a quilter, so I think it was inevitable that I started quilting eventually.  I remember making patchwork hexagons with her at a young age.  This is the quilt she made for my little one (yes, I chose the colours) and one she made for the Leukaemia Foundation.

So how about you?  Do you quilt?  Any advice for a novice?

Flick Faves on a Friday - Works in Progress

I love seeing works in progress, seeing the process and hopefully a bit of a creative mess as well.  There's something magical about watching someone animate a material into something brand new.

I just love the colour combination of red with aqua, teal or turquoise.  There is something so pretty about them together.

Flickr Faves on a Friday

Yesterday was Girl's Day in Japan, or more correctly, Hina Matsuri.

I wasn't organised enough to get decorations out this year but instead we celebrated my Grandma's 91st birthday.  After lunch we had a four generation tea party.  My grandma, mum and I drank from my Shinzi Katoh tea set, and the little one sat with her teddy bear and they played with her pink tin tea set.

Red shoes, how they make my heart sing.  Clicking hers together they helped Dorothy find her way home.  I wore red shoes to my wedding, as after all, they matched my red wedding dress.

Now, post baby, and alas my old pairs no longer fit, I'm on the search for the new perfect pair of a rich, fire-engine red, shoes.

Flickr Faves on a Friday

I've had a serious case of itchy feet syndrome of late.  My passport has been sitting neglected, rejected in a drawer for way too long.

But that is about to change soon.  The little one is about to get a passport of her very own as we're off to New Zealand to spend Christmas with my parents.  And then there's the hope for a buying trip to Japan next year....

Time soon to pack those suitcases!

Flickr Faves on a Friday - Shibori

Shibori in all its textural glory.

Inspired by my new fascination, a new technique added to my things-I-really-want-to-learn list - shibori. Until recently I had always thought of shibori, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique, as being just about the pattern it created.

Yesterday I had the chance to see the amazing work by Sharyn Hall at the Craft and Quilt Fair. Her pieces have this amazing texture and once again I heard that little voice in the back of my head, telling me "don't touch, look with your eyes". I so badly wanted to feel the soft delicate fabrics treated to create permanent little puffs of air. I'm still kicking myself for not booking into one of her workshops on the day.

Flickr Faves on a Friday

In last week's Flickr Faves I alluded to a new project planned, well today's images form the other half of the project's inspiration. Cute little jars, sweet little terrariums...

The project is a piece-a-day-for-a-year type project and I've been scared of committing to a start date. I'm thrilled by the size and duration, but terrified of it at the same time. A few previously planned start dates have been and gone... I need to just begin. I need to commit. I need to commit for all my mum's group friends who have been saving and storing jars for me. I need to commit for my husband who has been very good to not complain (too much) about having to step around boxes of empty baby food jars or to ask even once when I was going to start. I need to commit for me, for a creative project that isn't business related. So commit I will. Monday. This coming. The "Wish a Day" project will begin.

Flick Faves on a Friday

Inspiration boards.

I haven't had one since I moved out of my apartment in Japan over a year ago. I've been meaning to get one up.

Do you have one? What does it look like? I'd love to see it, leave me a link in the comments if you can.

In the meantime, I'm hoping these inspiration boards will inspire me to create a new one of my own.

Japanese sweets. Such delicate pieces of art, you're almost tempted not to eat them.

Flickr Faves - Frucci

I am so in love with these pieces by Francesca Vitali, of Frucci. She works a lot with sterling silver and old magazine papers. Love, love, love them!

You can see more of her stunning work here and here.
