Playing with Texture

After staring at a computer screen all week, last night my fingers needed to play with something other than a keyboard or mouse.  They were craving texture.

I got out some felt, some fabric, some scissors, a needle and thread and this is what I came up with... both pieces can be worn as either a brooch or pendant.  They are quite large, statement pieces if you will...

These kimono fabric with chrysanthemum pendants were created earlier this week.  I love how the 'mums seem to be sitting on top of a pond.  They remind me of this amazing lotus pond I visited in Cambodia a few years ago.  Chrysanthemums are used heavily in Japanese design too.

The only problem is, I've started seeing these flowers around the parts a bit since I bought them last year.  I'm hoping that the fact that I'm only using them as part of design with kimono fabric might set them apart... I'm not sure... what do you think?  I'd love your opinion.

Beautiful! I love the flowers like that...I have some of that Japanese Cord I'm working with too. Isn't it lovely?

nice, can the flowers be embedded in the resin domes? (I can't tell if that is what you are doing in your photo) that would be nice too!

The felt flowers are stunning!
I know what you mean about the plastic flowers - I loved them when I first saw them, but they've become a little boit oversaturated in blogland. But of course, that doesn't mean that they won't be popular with customers at markets. I love that you're using them for something completely unique and completely you!

Don't know where I've been hiding, because this is the first time I've seen these plastic flowers. I absolutely love what you have done with them Mel. Oh, and I think the felt creations are gorgeous.

Hi Melanie, I am actually making pendants very similar to yours. Of course I found your blog after I had already purchase supplies. So I had much the same problem. The way I see it, we are doing something rather unique with the japanese textiles and papers. I am hoping to share some history with people at the same time. Lofty goal I know but these traditional trades are fading much too quickly.

I have seen the flowers around too and barely resisted buying them. I still may If I think of another way to use them. For now I haven't seen anyone using them quite this way. I was thinking of using crystals on the front like this. We apparently think alike :)

Keep making beautiful things!
