A Rut

rut n
1. a groove or furrow in a soft road, caused by wheels
2. any deep mark, hole, or groove
3. a narrow or predictable way of life, set of attitudes, etc.; dreary or undeviating routine (esp in the phrase in a rut)

I'm thinking that people are going to start to notice. Going to notice that I write a so-called crafty blog, but that for quite a while now, I haven't crafted. I'm good at making excuses; "I need a more organised space", "It's too hot", "I'm too tired", "I don't have enough time". But I don't think any of those are it. I think it's simply that I'm in a rut.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not short of inspiration. I'm not short of ideas. It just seems that every time I go to start to make something lately, something stops me.

So last night, I go out one of my neglected sketch pads and started to write, started to doodle, started to journal in a sense. It's time to claw my way out of this deep furrow I find myself in and start to bring my ideas to life.

Have you ever found yourself in a rut? Found anything that helped?

Yes, this happens every so often. I think it's best to stop and have a mental break if not a mini holiday. Don't do any work-related stuff for at least a couple of days. Visit friends, go to the beach, go to the gallery - anything that will get your mind off work and hopefully you will come back refreshed and out of the rut. Good luck :)

I so wish that there was a magic answer!
The only thing that works for me is to not to make anything at all for a few days, eat out (so you don't need to cook either), and watch lots of trashy tv while lying about on the couch eating chocolate biscuits.

Sometimes I have so many ideas that THEY get in the way of me doing things. Sort of I have so much to do, I don't know where to start, so I just won't...

I think having a REASON to do something helps a bit. So to fulfil a meme, or to have something to work on when I go to Sewjourn or maybe promise some giveaway or something... so yeah, forcing myself to do something helps me, hopefully it means after completing something, I feel more motivated to do something else.

Maybe you could make a list of all the things you want to do (mines HUGE!) and then pick some things that you can apply a deadline to.

Even just blog that you are going to make a particular item so you are accountable.

OR you could sit around eating chocolate biscuits and watching B&B, Oprah and Judge Judy like Cam suggested...

Gosh, I'm going on a bit, aren't I? Believe me - I know what a rut is!

Oooooh, yes. But don't panic. Take time out. Says she, who finds it difficult to take her own sage advice.

Be a bit kinder to yourself - fact is you are probably tired and overwhelmed, my daughter calls it baby brain :>) Decide on a very small project and just do that - not thinking beyond it. You have made a start - your bookcase looks great. One small step at a time :>)

don't let it taunt you... i usually put things away, out of sight, and take a little break. then when inspiration hits again i do a small thing to see do i get back into the swing of things!

having a baby does cut down on your time a lot, doesn't it!!!?

Creative mojo cannot be "forced" as it comes from within. I usually take it as a sign of back off and do something else. Rest and relex Melanie - you have lots of other things on your mind at the moment. Liz x

Yep! I know what that is like - my so called crafty blog has not had anything to do with craft i have made since we moved house last November! I have my crafty room kind set up but it is like i am avoiding putting the sewing machine on the desk and starting anything.... i'm not sure what to do wither, i have the usual excuse of no time, but i had two week off work and still didn't do anything!

Yep, I have definitely been stuck in le rut. Usually I use the time to browse blogs, flickr, etsy just to see what other people are up to and then before I know it the crafty mojo is back!

Oh dear ! I think I am in disagreement here. When I am in a rut I make stuff ! I make simple things that I have made a hundred times before. Things I can use as gifts and give to friends. I find it kind of meditative and all of sudden ...BAM !!!

You definitely have lots on your plate right now so don't push yourself too much. This may just be your body/mind's way of telling you to stop and take a deep breath and recharge.

Good luck!
