Trying to Get the Courage

I'm trying to get the courage up to sign up to the World's Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation this year. The Foundation have been such a great source of support for my husband and I as well as more and more people that we're meeting through my husband's treatment. I'd love to give something back, something to help them continue their fantastic work.

The thing is though, and I'm being vain, I'm not sure I can pull the look off. These gorgeous women are well, gorgeous. None of them have double chins, bad skin or eyebrows in serious need of some attention. I'm just not sure if I'm brave enough.

It grows back - a temporary, minor inconvenience for the kindness. Dare people to ask you about it and explain the why in your own words about how the organization helped you.

do it - get a wig as back up if you feel you need it.

You are beautiful and what you would be doing is truly a beautiful thing in supporting the man you love and the others who've supported you both.

You can also colour your hair. It is all about being able to get sponsors and raise money so whether you shave or colour is totally up to you.

Just to let you know: I don't know if I could do the shave either.

Good luck
Lisa

Go on, do it! How liberating, and I imagine quite cathartic too. And like the top comment said, it grows back.

Very few women can pull of the bald/short-shave look as a style thing... I really doubt I would be comfortable doing it, so I guess it's a matter of weighing up the discomfort you might feel for a bit with the worthiness of the reason for doing it!

If as Lisa says you can colour your hair too, perhaps you could do something outrageous in that department that would raise both funds and awareness (but not have to wait 2 years for the hair to grow back to its current length!).

Don't know Melanie,
If you are not feeling up to it at the moment. Maybe an outrageous colour would be the way to go. Perhaps when you are feeling more on top of things and braver, altogether, then go for it. You will remember when your Dad did it years ago. Raised heaps for such a great cause. Unfortunatley, the need will always be there, so if it's not done until later, it would still be wonderful.

I suspect you'd look beautiful. But I am biased. I love a shaved head!

I send my blessings, no matter which way you go. I am thinking of you all.

Love,
Karin

I did it a few years ago and I definately did not look like those women...in fact I look like I had just stepped out of womens prison...
But given that it is such a huge campaign, most people just presumed I had been part of the worlds greatest shave and didn't even mention it...
(either that or they were scared of the bald fat lady ).

and I loved never having to do my hair!

I think you're selling yourself way too short. Go and have a good look in the mirror at those gorgeous eyes and sparkling smile and I dare you to say that you couldn't pull off a lack of hair that's backed up by love.

I think you'd find it quite liberating!

why dont you get a real short sexy haircut and a great colour....that will raise money AND make you feel fabulous too - which is very important!

I totally think you could pull it off, you have such a beautiful face for it. I must say it would take a huge amount of courage but imagine how good you would feel afterwards having done it and if you hated it you could make some gorgeous kimono fabric scarves!

If you aren't brave enough.... do something else to help the foundation ... like, maybe something with your beautiful kimonos or your wonderful creations.... must be something other than shaving your head...put on your thinking cap...........

some great comments there and they said most of what i came to say... If you feel that you can do the shave your beauty will show in why you have done it, your justified pride will shine through... if you don't feel you can do the shave, there are other options as people have mentioned, colour, create...

Wow - I know I couldn't do it - I'd look like an alien. I don't look good WITH hair. And the hair helps to hide some of the bad stuff, lol.

I like the idea of colour though. I'm sure you look fabulous no matter what you decide.

I can totally understand the seriousness of this decision. I am way to vain to even contemplate it - so totally applaud you for even thinking about it. Either way to shave or colour makes a fabulously bold statement of Kre8ive Generosity. There is no greater advocacy tool than a passionate individual willing to stand up and be a talking point for a cause. Whatever you chose to do just remember that there is nothing sexier than a confident woman.

oooh, I agree with Malinda, if you shave then you can get a funky new wig, something totally stunning & wear that when you feel like it.
saying that, i don't think I'd be brave enough to do it either. it is summer though & hair grows back pretty quick...hmmm
hugs to you & your family Melanie.

Wow what a decision, I couldn't do the shave. My hair takes so long to grow back that a bad slightly short haircut makes me feel depressed because it takes years not months to grow out. So I would lean towards the colour option.
BumbleVee has a good point. You could dedicate a portion of the profits from your etsy sales of a particular item or for a set time frame. Or maybe a raffle of one or two pieces at one of the markets you attend. You could do a lucky dip type thing of end of run items that don't fit with your current theme for your stall...just getting carried away with ideas! You'll come up with the right thing for you.

I shaved mine shortish before I lost it because of chemo. Seriously, your features shine right from your face once you have no hair. Much as as I say that though, I can't wait for mine to grow back.

Hope you raise heaps!

As one of the women in your photos, thank you. I was told by my hairdresser and best friend a few times that I have a great head shape. I figured, if she lied to me, I'd find out the hard way.

It's a VERY liberating feeling to be bald. I wore wigs for a couple of weeks and that was fun to have different hair every day. Hats were great fun too!

I thought about doing the shave this year as well. Maybe next year. :)

Good luck if you decide to do it!
