Yesterday we stayed closer to "home" and went to Arimatsu, an old town famous for its Shibori dyeing. It's essentially a tie-dyeing technique but each intricate pattern is carefully printed onto the fabric in a washable ink, then the details carefully hand stitched ready for dyeing. Depending on the design and style a length of fabric can take months to stitch.
The town is easily done in a couple of hours at a slow wandering pace and was a perfect little trip from the centre of Nagoya. The Arimatsu Shibori museum held some stunning examples, had an interesting video in English to explain the process and we were able to watch a couple of the women at work.
