How Well Do You Know Japan?

For quite a while now, I've been meaning to name my bag ranges, give a name to the styles. I've played around with a few ideas but until tonight, none have stuck with me. As I was playing with some pairing some patterns I had the thought "This is rather Harajuku".

The mind kept running as I thought, some of my obi bags are a little Ginza. So, the naming process began. While I don't except everyone to fully "get" the names, I'd still like them to have some meaning to fellow Japanophiles.

So I'm wondering, what places in Japan do you associate with different styles or feelings? Not necessarily city names, but rather, areas within the cities. Here's a few quick thoughts of my own...

Harajuku - young and funky with patterns and colours all mashed together

Ginza - up market and sophisticated

Ohara - quiet and tranquil

Pontocho - geisha

Any thoughts anyone?

  1. Kichijoji - fun and quirky but understated

Akiba/Akihabara - technology! (say, for example if you have bags/pouches for cell phones/ipods)

    This is fun!

mmmm... that's off the top of my head... any style in particular you're looking for a place name for?

  2. Hi there Melanie.

    Thinking big rather than small:

Kyoto is home. I especially like the various cafes and temples and shrines for relaxing in.

    Tokyo is cosmopolitan.

    Osaka is like a holiday.

    Hokkaido is a farm.

The Ryukyus and Yakushima are all chill. Just like NZ in a way...

    I thought:
    Hokkaido - All natural
    Yokohama - Stylish/fun
    Fuji - must have
Shinkansen - for those who live in the fast lane!
Okasan - every girl needs one
    Niseko - sporty/upbeat/trendy/young
    Hmmm,
    Sorry, they're pretty weak!

shikoku - relaxed and laid back
Arashiyama - traditional / serene / pretty much anything with bamboo on it....
odaiba - manufactured / modern for the sake of it, almost kitch
shinjuku - evening bags, a bit glitsy
The Yoshiwara - a little OTT (like an orian)

Awaji- back in time, country, tranquility

Thank you for taking time to comment, I treasure each and everyone one of them. I always reply to them in my head, but must confess, these days it takes me much longer to actually email that reply.
